Syd Brings Stellar Second Album to Brooklyn Steel

Sydney Loren Bennett, best known simply as Syd, has been gracing us with her stylish musical talents for more tha a decade as a member and resident DJ of the LA music collective Odd Future, her band, the Internet, and more recently solo. The newly minted 30-year-old continues to collaborate, inviting the likes of Kehlani, Smino and Lucky Daye to appear on her sophomore effort, Broken Hearts Club. Having recently shared with Essence, the soft-spoken artist confided about her confidence in owning her voice, “I used to see [my voice] as a weakness, but it ultimately became a strength for me. The fact is that I can’t do what other singers do but honestly — a lot of them could never do what I do.” Infusing 90’s R&B grooves with her signature beats, the Broken Hearts Club tour stopped at Brooklyn Steel on Sunday night of Memorial Day weekend. 

To say the evening was a vibe is an understatement. Her loyal admirers were ready to devour everything that Syd brought. Opening with material from her solo debut, Fin, she kicked off with “Insecurities” before being poured a cup of white wine to toast the evening. Fans roared upon the first few notes of the Internet’s “Special Affair” and clapped along to “You’re the One,” a track she guested on for Kaytranada. Syd shifted focus to Broken Hearts Club, as she asked the crowd to imagine their speedy vehicle of choice for “Fast Car” and followed that with the bumpin’ “Right Track.”

Throughout the performance, she’d grab phones to give up-close performance gems to fans, while they gifted her framed artwork and a sunflower. There was a brief interlude before Syd returned to the stage with the more downtempo “Cybah” and the sweet ballad “Out Loud.” There would be no encore, rather the evening was capped off with “Girl,” a standard from the Internet. —Sharlene Chiu | @Shar0ck
